A split at the mortise is a new leg, not a longer screw.

The screws pulled because the mortise was tired. Pauline cuts that leg out, sets a new one in the same opening, and rehangs the door. If the header has dropped she stops and shows the gap. Filling that gap with trim is how you get a door that only latches in July.
